 This quote well explains the process of self - discovery, which requires one to explore one's ideas, thoughts, values, preferences and opinions with regard to life , world and society.It is a personal act that one accomplishes through the journey of life.One of the most famous methods of self - discovery was that of Mahatma Gandhi. He experimented with the technique of Satyagraha in South Africa, self- discovering himself in the process.Similarly , Buddhist monks indulge in chanting and meditation for self - discovery.Let us consider an anecdote to precisely explain the process of self - discovery.

Rahul & his father were chilling in a classic pleasant morning. Rahul was listening to the audiobook "THE ALCHEMIST" . On the other hand , his father , a lawyer, was watching YouTube videos of Michael Sander.The video was elaborating the nuances about the topic " justice " . Though the father son duo were listening to varied source, the common thing between them was the process of self discovery. Rahul , while listening to the story of The Alchemist, was discovering himself in the personal arena . On the other hand, his father was in the process of self discovery in the professional arena .So , from above anecdote we are able to comprehend that the process of self-discovery can be varied.
SELF - DISCOVERY & TECHNOLOGY

Self- discovery is a long journey of discovering our inner self , trying to discover who we are , our potential, purpose and principles that guide us into different paths in life . It is a unique way for us to explore our personalities, values , beliefs & tendencies. The ultimate destination of journey is to find who we are and what makes us unique. This self- questioning & examination of our beliefs was mainly driven by retrospection and societal association.
   
     With the advent of technology, the process of self-discovery is increasingly getting dependent on technology i.e., getting technologically outsourced. With 4.5 billion internet users and advancing pace of scientific innovation, technology has been pervading all aspects of our life . With increasing technocratization , the conventional sources of self-discovery are declining. Nuclearization of family and globalisation has diluted conventional methods of self-discovery.This shift has created a vaccum and technology has quickly filled this vaccum.

SIGNIFICANCE OF TECHNOLOGICALLY OUTSOURCED SELF - DISCOVERY

Now let us explore what is the significance of this technologically outsourced process of self-discovery.Outsourcing helps us to set benchmarks, so that we would be motivated to achieve targets .For example, in the Healthify app , the AI based algorithm to track a person 's diet helps an individual to monitor his/ her health.This , makes him/ her physically healthier.The act of self - awareness becomes easier with the help of technology.Similarly various career counseling apps like ' Career Guide ' helps the youth to be acquainted with numerous career options.It helps the individual not only to identify their abilities,but also to develop and leverage them .

      Self- questioning and examination of thoughts,words and actions brings clarity about individual gains. At times conventional means of self-discovery becomes cumbersome as well.Often we end up getting wrong advice or lose considerable amount of time in self- discovery.Technology has speeded up this discovery. Today , at the click of a mobile phone through videos and apps ,we are able to get clarity about individual interest, preferences and purpose of life. Our value system gets shaped that in turn shapes our personality.Today easily a person can meditate by listening to light healing music amidst the hustle and bustle of the busy city life.

PROBLEMS WITH TECHNOLOGICALLY DRIVEN SELF - DISCOVERY

  However, this outsourcing of self-discovery reinforced by technology is often laden with problems. Nowadays,the number of likes that we garner in social media has become the metric of our happiness.Technology affects our food habits as well. For instance, celebrity endorsed aerated drinks and packaged diet dominate our meal .Here, we need to stop and ask ourselves a question, " is it our self-choice or are we the victims of herd mentality?"

         Technologically driven self discovery process has led to increase in consumerism as well .Humans have been reduced to just statistical numbers. Furthermore,the events of cyber crime like that of Cambridge Analytica proves how are ideological preferences are being influenced by external agencies.Similar pattern can be observed in the revealations by Edward Snowden.Technology has started manipulating us rather than increasing awareness about us. Billions of social media posts , do's and don'ts, has made simple topics highly decentralised.This further leads to utter confusion and anxeity amongst individuals . Instead of self discovering oneself one loses oneself.

CONCLUSION

In spite of the above demerits, self discovery becomes extremely important.Socrates has remarked that an unexamined life was not worth living .Lack of self discovery has implications on individual and social relationships.It can result in feeling of relative depravition .So, the need is to strike a balance between technologically outsourced self discovery and conventional self discovery.Digital detoxing coupled with proper human interaction can be an effective way of self discovery. It is said that the path to self discovery cannot be traversed without altruistic motives. Thus, democratising technology can be a way to attain self - fulfilment that is necessary for a holistic life .
